Moving image

Moving image refers to any animated image or video for example a film or television series. In most DVD's you will be presented with a menu when loading it up on you DVD player or computer. You will then be able to navigate to various different elements of the DVD one of these often being moving image. For example, one of the DVD'S which I analysed "Scrubs" had a series of television episodes within the DVD'S files. This means that you can watch all of these episodes by navigating yourself to them from the menu. Other DVD's which I analysed such as "A Scanner Darkly" featured full length movies as moving images. They also included movie trailers and behind the scenes in the "Special Features" section found in the menu screen.

It is also possible to have moving image on the menu screen in the "Drop Zone." These will often be in the form of short looped videos or animated .GIFS.

Above is the drop zone from the DVD I analysed "A Scanner Darkly." The images in the background are on a continuous loop.

There is also moving images in the special features in the form of video showing interviews and the making of.

Text-based files

It is not common, but sometime text-based files can be found within DVD's. This is not common as most of the time DVD's are used for moving image. However text based files may be used as extras within the DVD. For example in the "Scrubs" DVD there is a text-based file of the script as an extra with the DVD. Often these will be in the form of .PDF'S which you can download.

There is a text based PDF on the avengers DVD which is a hidden Easter egg (above.) If you can find it a PDF will load with biographies of all the characters on.

Image based files

This refers to still images within the DVD. These are normally the standard image types such as jpeg. or png. However they are compressed when burning them onto the DVD making them much smaller meaning for more room. These are often found in the drop zone at the menu but can also be found elsewhere on the DVD.

In front of the moving image on the scanner darkly there is an image based filed with the logo on.

Image slideshows

Image slideshows are a series of still images on a continuous loop. These are often found in the drop zone on the main menu but can also be found elsewhere.

On the Scanner Darkly DVD I looked at there is image slideshows showing snapshots and concept art in the special features. If you click on them it goes to the next image in the slideshow.

Additional material and features

Any features that don't come into the other categories com into this. This could be additional features such as games or Easter eggs.

Hidden in the DVD "Memento" is a memory game which allows you to access hidden features and Easter eggs.
